Philadelphia’s $20 million project has reconnected the Manayunk Canal with the Schuylkill Riverl, restoring flow to a waterway that had been stagnant for 85 years. he work removed decades of built-up sediment and restored water flow, improving water quality downstream where the Belmont and Queen Lane treatment plants draw about 30% of the city’s drinking water.
The restoration reconnects the canal to its natural ecosystem, creating healthier conditions for fish, birds, and other species. A pilot program will seed the waterway with thousands of freshwater mussels to examine their role in cleaning the stream. The project is already showing water quality gains and is expected to boost recreation and tourism along the Schuylkill River corridor.
