World’s first fusion plant aims for zero-carbon power, breaks ground in Washington State [Interesting Engineering]

Helion Energy has begun site work on its Orion fusion plant in Malaga, Washington, which is expected to become the world’s first commercial fusion power facility. Backed by more than $1 billion in private investment, Orion is scheduled to start supplying electricity by 2028, with power contracted for Microsoft data centers. The company’s aim is to deliver zero-carbon electricity using pulsed linear fusion technology.

“Fusion represents an inspiring frontier in the world’s pursuit of clean and abundant power,” said Melanie Nakagawa, Microsoft’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “While the path to commercial fusion is still unfolding, we’re proud to support Helion’s pioneering work here in Washington state as part of our broader commitment to investing in sustainable energy.”
