A massive water main failure in North Jersey cut service to nearly 200,000 residents and put a spotlight on the state’s crumbling water infrastructure. Many of the region’s pipes are more than a century old, and the system is showing its age.
“Their infrastructure wasn’t in the shape that it should have been in,” George said of the PVWC, adding that ratepayers don’t want to pay higher fees to upgrade the system. “How do you bring it up to shape?” George asked rhetorically. “The way you do it is with state and federal funds.”
