New Jersey has launched the nation’s first statewide “Target Zero” plan, aiming to eliminate traffic deaths by 2040. The initiative, developed by the Target Zero Commission, outlines 68 recommendations to improve road safety, including redesigning dangerous intersections, expanding speed enforcement, and investing in pedestrian and cyclist protections. Officials emphasize that success depends on collaboration across state agencies, municipalities, and communities.
”The 72-page plan, described as the nation’s first statewide strategy to end roadway fatalities, lays out an ambitious roadmap: 29 legislative actions for lawmakers to consider and 39 additional measures for state agencies and local law enforcement to implement.”
While ambitious, the plan reflects growing concern over rising roadway fatalities and seeks to align New Jersey with international “Vision Zero” efforts. Implementation challenges remain, but leaders hope the strategy will make the state a model for traffic safety nationwide.
