Customers served by a municipal electric department should report outages directly to their municipality. The outage numbers above match the utilities’ storm-reporting information; some general state directories list separate customer-service numbers. (NJOEM utility directory)
Cooling Centers
During extreme heat or an extended power outage, cooling centers may be opened at libraries, senior centers, municipal buildings and other public facilities.

- Call 2-1-1 for help locating an available cooling center.

Downed Power Lines
Treat every downed wire as live and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away; do not touch the wire or anything it may be contacting. Call 911 and notify the appropriate electric utility.
If a power line falls on a vehicle, remain inside unless the vehicle is on fire or another immediate danger requires evacuation.
During an Outage
- Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
- Never operate a generator, grill or fuel-burning appliance indoors or inside a garage.
- Place generators outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents.
- Do not use a gas oven or stove to heat a home.
- Call 911 if someone is experiencing a medical emergency.
- Call NJ 2-1-1 for information about warming or cooling centers, shelters and other non-emergency assistance.
