Micron Technology’s planned semiconductor plant in Clay, New York, will consume more electricity than the entire state of Vermont, using 640 million kilowatt-hours per month. The $100 billion investment is expected to create 9,000 direct jobs and 40,000 support positions over 20 years, significantly boosting the Central New York economy.
Micron has pledged to use 100% renewable energy for its electricity needs, aligning with New York’s goal of an emission-free electric grid by 2040. However, meeting this commitment will be challenging without significant new wind and solar projects.
The state faces challenges in adding the necessary renewable capacity to meet its ambitious energy goals, with concerns about the pace of project deployment and the need for new transmission lines.
