PJM’s newly released 2025 Regional Transmission Expansion Plan (RTEP) outlines accelerating electricity demand across its 13‑state footprint, with New Jersey facing some of the fastest growth. The report highlights 122 new baseline transmission projects totaling $11.8 billion and 445 network upgrades supporting new generation. PJM attributes rising load to rapid data center expansion, electrification of vehicles and buildings, and renewed manufacturing activity.
Regionwide, PJM now forecasts a 3.1% annual increase in summer peak demand—double last year’s projection. New Jersey’s winter peak is expected to grow 3.8% by 2034–35, while summer peak rises 3.1%. Existing in‑state generation totals 13,661 MW, dominated by natural gas and nuclear. PJM warns that generator retirements—6.5 GW announced in 2025—are outpacing new resources, creating near‑term reliability risks. The report details reforms to accelerate interconnection, expand capacity rights, and ensure the grid can meet rapidly tightening supply‑demand conditions.
