New Jersey has a rich mining history dating back to the early 1700s, with iron being the most common mineral extracted. Mining thrived for centuries, contributing significantly to the colonial economy and the Revolutionary War effort. By 1970, however, mining operations had largely ceased, leaving behind a network of abandoned mines beneath 75 municipalities across eight counties. Recent sinkholes along Route 80 have disrupted transportation, highlighting the potential consequences of this hidden legacy. A state DEP database lists 588 abandoned mines, including iron, copper, and graphite mines. Residents can use an interactive map to check for mines near their addresses.
