With winter weather and the chance of snowstorms in full swing, New Jersey American Water and The Watershed Institute are reminding residents, businesses and municipalities to use road salt responsibly. Excessive salt runoff can harm drinking water sources, aquatic ecosystems and infrastructure long after the snow melts.
Tips include shoveling snow before it turns to ice, using only the amount of salt needed, spreading granules efficiently and switching to liquid brine.
